I remember boys who went but didn't come back. I was so afraid my fiancé would be drafted, but he was in college. Every day on the radio, they would give a count of how many Viet Cong were killed and how many Americans were killed that day. It was always a huge amount of Viet Cong to few Americans, but we found out later that was lies. John Kennedy wanted to get us out of the war, but Johnson expanded it. We were told communism would spread if we didn't stop them now. Then we surrendered. The TV was filled with helicopters evacuating South Vietnamese and Americans, and people were trying to hang on to the helicopter's skids. After 45 years elapsed, I was getting my nails done, and the girl doing them was Vietnamese. She was getting ready to go home on vacation. I asked her if the Vietnamese people hated America. She said no. So many of the people had no memory of the war. I would like to visit there someday.

They were hoping it would end pretty soon before someone they loved or cared about got drafted. The longer it went on, the better the chances were that a loved one would be conscripted.
