Andrew Johnson unsuccessfully ran for a seat in the Senate in the 1868 election, while he was still serving out Lincoln's second term. He then ran for the House of Representatives in 1872, and was again defeated. He was finally elected to serve as Senator from the State of Tennessee in 1874, but died of a stroke in July 1875, so he was only in office for a few months.

Johnson was the only former President to serve in the US Senate.
