Augustus was an honorary title of the emperors. It meant roughly 'the venerable one. It was given to Octavian when he became the first Roman emperor after the fall of the Roman Republic. Octavian had already changed his name to Imperator Caesar Divi Filius (the winner, son of Caesar) because he was the adoptive son of Julius Caesar. When he was given the title of Augustus he added it to his name, which became Imperator Caesar Divi Filius Augustus. The title of Augustus was then given to all successive emperors.

Historians use Augustus as a name for Octavian when they write about the period when he was the emperor.

Why do historians refer to Augustus reign as the principate?

Historians refer to the reign of Augustus, and all other imperial reigns for that matter, as the principate because it is an accurate description of the form of government. They don't refer to it as the "empire" as Rome was already an empire for at least 200 years before Augustus. The term principate, comes from the only title Augustus took for himself which was "princeps" meaning "first citizen".Historians refer to the reign of Augustus, and all other imperial reigns for that matter, as the principate because it is an accurate description of the form of government. What kind of government system did Cesar Augustus create?

Basically it was a monarchy, although he disguised the fact by referring to himself as simply the first citizen. He kept the externals of the republic, but made sure all the real power rested in himself. The proper name for his government is the Principate, although many people erroneously refer to it as the "empire".
