After he graduated from Columbia in 1983, he worked as a community organizer and advocate for the poor in Chicago. He then went to Law School, graduating from Harvard in 1991. After that, he became a civil rights lawyer, and a college professor. In 1996, he entered politics: he ran for the Illinois State Senate and won. He became a U.S. senator in 2004, after serving three terms in Illinois as a state senator.
