It was not well manned and susceptible to surprise attacks. Ethan Allen's Vermont Militia (the Green Mountain Boys) ran into Benedict Arnold's Connecticut Militia on the way to Ticonderoga. Both wanted to take the fort, but this happened pre-Continental Army, so neither were bound as subordinates to each other. After a meeting between the militias, they agree to attack separately.Arnold literally knocked on the front door of Ticonderoga and demanded surrender. The few Regulars (British) that were in charge of the outpost obliged him in their pajamas.The "Americans" held it until June 1777, when British forces under General John Burgoyne again occupied high ground above the fort and threatened the Continental Army troops, leading them to withdraw from the fort and its surrounding defenses. The only direct attack on the fort took place in September 1777, when John Brown led 500 Americans in an unsuccessful attempt to capture the fort from about 100 British defenders.
