I suppose the short answer is, he didn't! Joseph Smith had prophesied several years previous that the Church would have to move to the Rocky Mountains because of persecution. After Joseph Smith was murdered, the government of Illinois asked the Mormons to leave the state. It was decided that this time they must move west, because they had been kicked out of several places in the east already. The Mormons in Illinois split into several groups that traveled to Utah over a period of two years. Each of these groups was lead by an experienced trail guide. Groups from other countries and recent converts made the trip in later years, also accompanied by experienced guides.

Brigham Young, one of the Twelve Apostles at the time, traveled with the first group because he had received a vision of of the place where they would finally settle. Once they arrived in the Salt Lake Valley, he declared that it was the right place, directed everyone to set up camp, and started planning the city. The other groups (most waiting in Nebraska) were sent for and came to meet them. That winter, Brigham Young was named President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and successor to Joseph Smith, due in part to his role in leading the Saints to Utah.

Brigham Young was the second president of the Latter Day Saints (Mormon) church. Mormons believe that the president of the church is a modern day prophet.

HIstorically, Brigham Young lead the Mormons west and guided them in settling what is now known as Utah. They fled west because of heated religious persecution that cost many of them their lives, homes, and more.

He is known for being a polygamist (having multiple wives), an acceptable practice then that the LDS church no longer supports.

Under his direction Salt Lake City was constructed, as well as a number of temples in the western united states (Salt Lake City Temple is the most well known among them).

For historic significance in a more religious sense see the book "Presidents of the Church"

Mormons believe his most important contribution was as a prophet of God and second president of the restored Church.

Historians and scholars believe his most important contribution was leading the church to establish a new stronghold in the nearly uninhabited mountain west, and directing the economic affairs of the newly settled church in such a way that they were able to survive and thrive in the harsh conditions they found there.

By the way, "Mormon" is a nickname for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who are more likely to describe themselves either as LDS or as Latter-day Saints.
