He then put into practice his business administration degree by managing a liquor store and co-owning a drugstore in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He relocated to Glenarden, Maryland, where took a position as electronic technician at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. He retired almost 30 years later as the center's employee relations manager.
