Christopher Columbus is credited as the person who discovered America, although it is now known that the Norse had been to North America 500 years earlier.
He was an Italian, from Genoa - although his voyage was financed by Spain.
What he "actually" discovered (that is, he was the first European to find) was the island San Salvador in the Bahamas.
It was his connection with Spain that began the European settlements in the Americas.
