What did Christopher Columbus accomplished?

Columbus found the Bahamas and not much else. He made 4 trips in his life and virtually ended up in the same area. He made a contract with the Spanish king and he was suppose to bring back gold and treasures in turn he would get a percentage and be made "Adrmiral of the Deep Blue Sea" and the title would pass to his sons. He did not find gold from the Natives on Hispinola and cut off the hand of a Native who brought him a nugget. Columbus was NOT Italian, but was Spanish. His diary was in Spanish, his wife Spanish nobility, and new evidence points to his family being political adversaries of the crown. On his last voyage Columbus was ship wrecked for 2 years and was sick when he was rescued. He died at home soon after returning.
