India was called Hindustan back then. The country didn't become India until it was occupied by the Brittish whom changed the name to India. (the name derived from the sindhu river) In any case the American Indians got their name because when Christopher Columbus discovered America and saw its natives he said "Truly these are children of God." The last word in what he said was "Indianos" and thus is how they became known as Indians. Early Indians called the white man "Americani's as they Spat the word. IF anything it would be wrong to call Indians Americans as that is what they called their enemy (the white man) "Americani's."
