What event in 1939 started World War 2?

In reality, there was fighting long before this point, but the official beginning of WWII was when Germany invaded Poland. England and France had threatened Germany, stating that if Hitler were to invade Poland that the two would declare war on him. Hitler ignored the threat, and proceeded to invade. In response, England and France declared war on Germany.

Why did Hitler not expect England or France enter what became World War 2?

Hitler was sure that neither England nor France would declare war against Germany. His belief was that with his alliance with the USSR combined with the fact that neither England nor France could save Poland, would prevent a world war. It's true that Poland could not be saved. Hitler occupied the western half of Poland and Stalin, as per his agreement with Hitler occupied the eastern half of Poland.

Why did Hitler ask Stalin to sign a non aggression treaty?

Hitler knew a war was about to start- he wanted to invade Poland, which was allied with France and England. He did not want to repeat World War I, where Germany was stuck fighting against France, England and Russia at the same time. So he made the non-aggression pact to keep the Soviet Union (Russia) out of the war. This was successful. Eventually Hitler broke the treaty and attacked the Soviet Union.
