England and France had threatened Germany, stating that if Hitler were to invade Poland that the two would declare war on him. Hitler ignored the threat, and proceeded to invade. So he made the non-aggression pact to keep the Soviet Union (Russia) out of the war. This was successful. Eventually Hitler broke the treaty and attacked the Soviet Union.
