However, he never became an officer. Hitler was somewhat suspicious towards high military officers, especially at the end of the war, when Germany was losing ground. He tended to give strange orders, even though his close military advisors gave him other advice. This could have to do with Hitler having never become an officer. He was very proud of having fought in the infantry, and thought that he had a natural comprehension of the art of war, without needing to study it in a military school.

Hitler was injured at the end of the war; he was temporarily blinded by mustard gas in October 1918. He was in a military hospital when he heard that Germany surrendered. He believed that Germany had been betrayed, and swore to take revenge.

Some people think that his experience with mustard gas was a trauma, and some historians believe that it could have had an influence on the use of gas by Nazis in the concentration camps.
