They came to realize that they had to control their own destinies, and to emulate the imperial powers that they had copied (to avoid the fate that china had fallen into, due to stagnation), Japan sought to carve up their own empire in the east. Thankfully, with the end of world war two, we were able to remove the taint of Imperialism from japanese society and culture.
