He became a Senator, and defended the rights of states. Also defended the rights of the minority party (pretty much like a modern 'senate minority leader'). and he supported slavery. He served in the Senate until his death in 1850.
(Random true story I read about him, while dying of Tuberculosis he forced himself to arrive at the Senate to hear his friend as well as political rival Daniel Webster speak....this was one of the last times he was able to make it to the Senate.
