He was a botanist.
Sir Joseph Banks was not a passenger on the First Fleet. He was botanist with Captain James Cook when Cook charted the east coast of Australia in 1770. His purpose was to record and classify new species of plants found on Cook's journey. While in Australia, Banks, and the Swedish and Finnish botanists Daniel Solander and Dr Herman Spöring made the first major collection of Australian flora, describing many species new to science. Banks was also strongly in favour of British settlement and the colonisation of Australia.

The First Fleet of convicts from Great Britain arrived in Australia in January 1788. At first, on 18 January, it came to e site recommended by Sir Joseph Banks and James Cook - Botany Bay - which was found to be unsuitable for settlement. So the First Fleet moved north to Port Jackson, arriving on 26 January 1788.
No "famous" botanist accompanied the First Fleet.Famous botanist Sir Joseph Banks accompanied James Cook on the Endeavour when Cook became the first European to chart the eastern coast of Australia.
Botany Bay in New South Wales was where James Cook and his influential botanist, Sir Joseph Banks, first landed in 1770. Because Banks was so impressed with the land and the harbour, this was the area recommended for initial colonisation.
The First Fleet initially landed at Botany Bay in New South Wales on 18 January 1788, as this was the location recommended by James Cook and botanist Sir Joseph Banks when they first sailed up the eastern coast of Australia eighteen years earlier. The First Fleet moved from Botany Bay, as Governor Arthur Phillip noted straight away that the conditions there were not suitable for settlement. The fleet then arrived at Port Jackson on 26 January 1788. This is where the city of Sydney now stands.
All of Captain James Cook's voyages were completed before the First Fleet ever departed Portsmouth, England. Cook died eight years before the First Fleet set sail.
The First Fleet did not bring fire ants to Australia. Fire ants were first detected in Australia in Brisbane in 2001. The First Fleet arrived in 1788, before the Brisbane area was even explored.
There was no specific botanist who travelled with the First Fleet. The First Fleet should not be confused with the journey of James Cook up the eastern coast of Australia, when he named the land New South Wales and claimed it for England.Sir Joseph Banks was the English botanist who sailed with Cook, and after whom the banksia species of plant was named. There were also the Swedish and Finnish botanists, Daniel Solander and Dr Herman Spöring.
The First Fleet was supposed to land at Botany Bay in New South Wales, because this was the location recommended by James Cook and botanist Sir Joseph Banks when they first sailed up the eastern coast of Australia in 1770. The First Fleet moved from Botany Bay, as Governor Arthur Phillip noted straight away that the conditions there were not suitable for settlement. There was insufficient fresh water; the harbour was not deep enough or sheltered enough for future growth; the soil was unsuitable for farming; there was insufficient timber that would be suitable for building. The fleet then moved north to Port Jackson, which is where the city of Sydney now stands.

Quite simply, Cook didn't recommend it. When James Cook sailed up the eastern coast of Australia and claimed the land for England under the name of New South Wales, he sailed into the harbour at Botany Bay. This was the area he and the ship's botanist, Sir Joseph Banks, recommended as suitable for a colony.
