The First Fleet was supposed to land at botany Bay in New South Wales, because this was the location recommended by James Cook and botanist Sir Joseph Banks when they first sailed up the eastern coast of Australia in 1770.
The First Fleet moved from Botany Bay, as Governor Arthur Phillip noted straight away that the conditions there were not suitable for settlement. There was insufficient fresh water; the harbour was not deep enough or sheltered enough for future growth; the soil was unsuitable for farming; there was insufficient timber that would be suitable for building.
The fleet then moved north to Port Jackson, which is where the city of Sydney now stands.
