Joseph Pulitzer encouraged the American people to donate for the Statue of Liberty by placing stories in his newspaper about how the statue would symbolize happiness and freedom. From there some poor children gave one penny and rich Americans gave thousands.

Joseph Pulitzer was a wealthy business man and the owner of the New York World Newspaper. He published a front page story on the Statue of Liberty's construction and asked if the people of New York would be willing to donate to help pay for its construction costs. He received over 100,000 dollars in donations to help pay for the building of the Statue of Liberty.
