The world almost came to an end due to the Cuban missile crisis and the USA embargo on the Soviet Union: the world was on the verge of Thermonuclear war.
Cuba in the Cold WarFollowing a revolution in 1959 Cuba adopted Communism, being the only state in the Americas to have a do so, or at least to have a Communist government that lasted. (In fact, it's still in office in 2006). An attempted invasion from the US ('Bay of Pigs' [and no it was not a bay full of floating pigs :^P]) was a fiasco and in 1962 Khrushchev tried to station long-range missiles on the island. This attempt led to the 'Cuban missile crisis' of 1962. When this began, the U.S. sent Fidel Castro a letter stating that the U.S. will remove their missiles from Turkey if Cuba remove theirs. Castro agreed to this and did so, marking an end to the Cuban Missile Crisis.
The Cold War is a reference to something else, not literally cold, but because no shots were ever fired. The Cold War was a race to the moon, and to who could make the most nuclear weapons fastest. Hope I helped.

Credit should go to both Nikita Kruchev and John Kennedy.
The Cuban missile crisis came to and end because Kennedy and Khrushchev made an agreement. In the agreement it stated that if Kennedy were to remove its naval blockade around Cuba and if it removes its missile bases in Turkey, Khrushchev would remove his missile bases from Cuba.
Kennedy offered to remove the American missiles from Turkey.

This did not come about because of any "war", but due to the confrontation between the US and the Soviet Union called the CUBAN MISSILE CRISIS. The US agitation over the missiles in Cuba was matched by Soviet agitation over the missiles in Turkey and the Soviets agreed that they would withdraw their weapons from Cuba if the US did similarly in Turkey.
Yes he was but not directly. Johnson advised John F. Kennedy as part of the Executive Committee of the National Security Council on what to do about the crisis. In the end, Kennedy placed naval ships around Cuba's border to stop incoming military supplies and, realizing the threat of possible war, Khrushchev - the Soviet leader at the time -decided to turn back his ships. In the end, the Soviet Union agreed to take down the weapon sites and the US. agreed not to invade Cuba.
