It was not so much a matter of Captain Arthur Phillip enjoying exploring, as that he had a strong sense of duty because of his position. He explored out of necessity.
While Alexander's personality certainly helped the Macedonian Empire to emerge, the background work was first done by his father (Phillip). Phillip unified Macedonia into a kingdom after his brother's death & subsequent collapse of the country using both military and diplomatic means, defeating the Paionians, Athenians, Thracians and Potiaea before marrying Olympias, Alexander's mother. Through these means Alexander was able to inherit a ready-made kingdom. When Phillip was assassinated in 336 BC Alexander took the throne and inherited a strong kingdom with an experienced army and a ready-made plan for invading Persia and freeing the Ionian states. This, along with his arrogent and ambitious personality (encouraged by both parents), combined with his excellent skills as a General (Leonidas tutored him as a child, as did Aristotle), was what led to the contribution of the Great Empire of Alexander. It is feasable that were Alexander not the man he had been, he could have managed to keep the Macedonian Empire as strong as Phillip left it however had Alexander been different he may not have succeeded his father at all.
