They did not take much food in comparison to the amount of people in the party. They only took 150 lbs of portable soup, rock salt, spices, and 6 five-gallon Kegs of spirits. The spirits would be consumed in case they were not near fresh water and the rock salt was used in preserving meat. Meat, which made up most of their diet on the trip, came mostly from hunting. They also did not bring any kettles, skillets, teapots, ladles, silverware or any other cooking utensils. They didn't bring any alum, iodine, or laudanum and also did not bring any various kinds of clothing. They brought little soap in the beginning, but often managed to either trade for it or make it themselves from animal fat. They also used animal fat to make oil for lighting fires or oiling down the any instruments that became rusted.
