After President Thomas Jefferson finalized the Louisiana Purchase, Jefferson had the chance to explore new territory that he and others believed could be a waterway to the Orient. Several years before the "Purchase", he had been trying to have the North West explored. There were few "takers". What Jefferson did was to chose a man who was his neighbor and also his personal secretary, Captain Meriwether Lewis for the expedition. Lewis was the son of a veteran of the Revolutionary War. His father was deceased. Lewis had no formal education, but he was a good hunter and local explorer. His service in the army was helpful. Jefferson saw to have him trained as best was possible for a journey that had no one dreamed could become as extensive as it was. Lewis learned basic medical techniques, and learned basic skills in Philadelphia, on using the stars, sun and moon as tools of land navigation. Lewis was also taught how to preserve animals he would capture and bring back to Jefferson.
Meriwether Lewis who had been appointed to the rank of Captain, was designated as the expedition "scientist". Prior to the expedition, Lewis went to Philadelphia for intense training by physician Benjamin Rush, astronomer-surveyor Andrew Ellicott, botanist Benjamin Barton, anatomist Casper Wister, and mathematician Robert Patterson. For three months he was tutored in the spring of 1803.

The primary objectives of the Lewis and Clark Expedition were to explore and map the newly acquired Louisiana Purchase, establish diplomatic relations with Native American tribes, find a practical route across the western half of the continent, and study the plants, animals, and geography of the region.
The three main goals of the Lewis and Clark expedition were to find a practical route to the Pacific Ocean, to establish trade with Native American tribes, and to study and document the plants, animals, and geography of the newly acquired Louisiana Territory.
Lewis and Clark were explorers, leading the famous 1803 expedition - the Corps of Discovery - from the Missouri to the Pacific Ocean; a trek intended to study the land and its characteristics and report back to President Jefferson. Although Lewis and Clark were soldiers, as were most of their expedition members, it was not a warlike excercise but simply an information-gathering expedition which turned out to be hugely successful and was accomplished with only one death, thought to be from appendicitis.
