After President Thomas Jefferson finalized the Louisiana Purchase, Jefferson had the chance to explore new territory that he and others believed could be a waterway to the Orient. Several years before the "Purchase", he had been trying to have the North West explored. There were few "takers". What Jefferson did was to chose a man who was his neighbor and also his personal secretary, Captain Meriwether Lewis for the expedition. Lewis was the son of a veteran of the Revolutionary War. His father was deceased. Lewis had no formal education, but he was a good hunter and local explorer. His service in the army was helpful. Jefferson saw to have him trained as best was possible for a journey that had no one dreamed could become as extensive as it was. Lewis learned basic medical techniques, and learned basic skills in Philadelphia, on using the stars, sun and moon as tools of land navigation. Lewis was also taught how to preserve animals he would capture and bring back to Jefferson.
