He instigated several rebellions in Red river and Saskatchewan. However many people feel that he did not do anything to warrant the death penalty. In modern times Riel is regarded as something of a Canadian hero as he helped in the creation and development of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. He also helped secure fair rights for the Metis (Half Native- half European) people. he has been honored with appearances on government stamps and coins. It has even been proposed that a statue of his likeness be constructed on parliament hill to commemorate his part in confederation.

Louis Riel was a Métis leader who led two rebellions against the Canadian government in defense of Métis rights and culture. He was ultimately captured and tried for treason, leading to his execution by hanging in 1885. Riel's actions continue to be controversial; some see him as a hero fighting for the rights of his people, while others view him as a traitor.
