In modern times Riel is regarded as something of a Canadian hero as he helped in the creation and development of Manitoba and Saskatchewan. He also helped secure fair rights for the Metis (Half Native- half European) people. he has been honored with appearances on government stamps and coins. It has even been proposed that a statue of his likeness be constructed on parliament hill to commemorate his part in confederation.
