he wasn't exactly looking for a new world but he was looking for a trade route to India as Europe had developed trade with India before their contact with India was lost as the ottoman Turks conquered Constantinople. since they needed the spices,gems,condiments which they imported they started to search for a new route to India thus leading to the discovery to north america, Cuba,west indies, Malaysia etc
