Since he was alive in the 1200's we can only guess those things. He did write a book telling what he saw, felt, and heard, but historians think he made up much of it. Much of the world was pretty stinky in this time because it had no Plumbing and sewage ran into rivers and down streets. People also didn't bathe so he probably smelled some foul odors. It took 4 years for him to reach China with his father and uncle.
