Walker, Mary Edwards (1832-1919), American physician and feminist, born in Oswego, New York, and educated at Syracuse Medical College. During the American Civil War she was commissioned as an assistant surgeon in the Union army, becoming the first woman to hold such a commission. She was later decorated for services performed on the field. Subsequently she practiced medicine in Washington, D.C. Walker was a lifelong advocate of woman suffrage, dress reform, and the abolition of capital punishment.

∙ 14y agoMary Edwards Walker died of natural causes on February 21, 1919 at the age of 86. If she died for anything, then it would have to be women's suffrage, as she was an active participant in the women's rights movement along with others leaders like Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. She died just a year prior to the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment to the US Constitution which granted women the right to vote.
