Mary Seacole was a biracial woman of Jamaican and Scottish descent who traveled to the Crimean front to provide soldiers with food, comfort and her folk medicine skills. When she asked the war department for permission they refused, but Mary used her own money to do it anyway. Largely forgotten for her contributions for years, she was honored as the Greatest Black Briton in 2004.
