Even then the Mexicans didn't attack, in fact it was the colonists who first attacked. So Mexico sent some soldiers over to the Alamo to set them straight, and they did.

Also there were several volunteers from the state of tennesee including the famous0 davi crocket. The texans were fighting for their independence from the mexican dictator antonio santa anna. 183 men and one woman and two children held back 5000 mexican troops for 13 days. 183 men killed around 2800 mexican troops before being over run.
