They were the first country to take a stand and fight militarily against the demands of Nazi Germany / Hitler. They were also the first country in Europe Hitler went after that had at least some kind of prepared army capable of putting up a fight.

They had a military protection treaty with England and France who promised to back them up militarily. It was attacked in 1939 by the Germans and this action started WW2. England and France then declared war on Germany to honor the treaty. However, like most countries at this time, England and France's armies/equipment were backdated and not immediately prepared to fight a new war. They needed time to ramp up production so they could build the mechanized weaponry needed to have a fighting chance.

Poland was not an independent state during World War 1. However, due to its land location, much of the human and material losses, as well as much of the fighting, took place on Polish lands.
