Like most children, she attended school. In her case, she was privately educated, so she had a governess and her schoolroom was at home. Later, she received special lessons in British constitutional law and history from a scholar in this field.

She also took swimming lessons, joined the Girl Guides (similar to the Girl Scouts in the US), and played with friends. During World War II, she lived outside of London for safety's sake, but when she was old enough, she joined one of the women's war services, the ATS, and learned to drive and service cars and trucks.
