Ronald Reagan worked in Iowa as a radio announcer, mostly doing sports along with general announcing. He did live broadcasts of Chicago Cub baseball from Iowa from a telegraph feed.
The station sent him to California where the Cubs trained , he made a screen test and signed a 7-year contract with Warner Brothers. It was renewed for another 7 years. He starred in over 50 movies. After movie parts became scarce he got into television work.

Ronald Reagan was born to a lower middle class family in Illinois in 1911. He lived in several cities and towns before his family moved to Dixon when he was nine. He was a lifeguard in high school in the 1920s.

Reagan was a popular two-term President of the United States and saw the beginning of the end of the long Cold War with the USSR. He was a successful movie star, making over 50 movies. He served two terms as governor of California.

Perhaps more remarkable, he did it all without the benefit of family connections or money.
