Ronald Reagan tested the presidential waters in 1968. However, Richard Nixon won the nomination at the Republican Convention followed by Nelson Rockefeller with Ronald Reagan in third place.In 1976, Reagan challenged incumbent President Gerald Ford in a bid to become the Republican Party's candidate for president. Gerald Ford won the nomination at the Republican convention.
