The former Soviet Union which is today mostly Russia, contriuted alot towards the birth of the internet, and most of NASA's technology is based upon Russian designs.

Russians made key contribution in space explorations (first sputniks, first robotic Lunar rovers (Lunokhods which were in fact also first extraterrestrial robotic rovers) , first space stations etc.). Nikolay Basov and Alexander Prokhorov shared the 1956 Noberl prize for invention of lasers/masers with American Charles Townes. Vladimir Zvorykin and Vladimir Rosing are considered ones of key inventors of TV. Alferov invented quantum heterostructures whithout which modern electronics is impossible (Nobel prize, 2000). Dolivo-Dobrovolsky invented three-phase systems which is the basic element of modern electrical systems. Such Russian inventions like arc welding (Nikolay Benardos), the first commercially viable and mass-produced type of synthetic rubber, so called polybutadiene synthetic rubber (Sergei Vasiljevich Lebedev), napsack parachute (Glep Kotelnikov) and light diod (Oleg Losev) are also worth of mentining. In fact many things were invented by several nations concurrently like incandescent lamp and radio and Russians have their inventors who participated in it (Lodygin and Popov correspondingly). The last important invention is Graphene (Konstantin Novoselov and Andrey Geim - Nobel Prize for 2010). Some inventions were ahead their time - Vladislav Ivanov invented magnetic resonance imaging as early as in 1960s. Works of Russian mathematicians (Petr Ufimtsev) made the key ground for Stealth technologies. Tokamak invented by Andrei Sakharov is the basic idea of the modern ITER project, a main hope for future power generation technologies. If you are realy interested what Russians invented see the list of Russian inventors in Wikipedia for example.

Did japan invent some of the United States most advanced technology?

No, they didn't "invent" most of the advanced technology. Like Germany, France, Russia, China, etc. they created their share of machines and systems, but mostly they have been primarily improvements, or redesigned machines, etc. Several countries are trying to claim credit for INVENTING the airplane; Russia & the US claim they were the first to invent the helicopter, someone's debating on which country first invented the TV...etc. So, this kind of arguing will probably continue for the next hundred years.
