St. Nicholas was a 3rd-4th century bishop in the town of Myra in Asia Minor, what is known as Turkey today. He was noted for his generosity to the poor. Most of the time his gifts were given in secrecy. He is also noted for bringing three young boys back to life who had been murdered and stuffed in a barrel of brine, thus his patronage of children.
