Sunni Muslims have always followed the same Islamic sources before & after the death of the prophet Muhammad, may Allah grant him with peace & blessings which are mainly:
1. The Holy Quran.
2. The Sunna of Muhammad PBUH, which means all His sayings, actions, commands & prohibition & every small detail of His glorious life.
the caliphs were Muhammad's successors, when Muhammad died there was turmoil between who had the right to succeed him...this started the sunni/ shia split
he died long time ago he was a prophet to the muslims

When the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) died, Abu Bakr (ra) his best friend was appointed kalipha. Shia's believe that he wasn't the right kalipha and Ali (ra) his son in law should have been kalipha. And from then on other differences have formed. But the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) told Muslims not to create splits in religion. That's why some Muslims like to not have the label of sunni or shia and rather just be called a Muslim.
After Muhammad died, but before He was buried, some Muslims decided they should elect their leader, others believed they should follow Ali, Muhammad's son-in-law as Muhammad told them too. They are still fighting over than 1,500 years later.
After Muhammad died the challenges were to allow for the Prevalence of Islamic edicts and the protection of Muslims
Sunni Muslims observe the Prophet Muhammed's (also known as Mohammed or Muhammad) birthday on the 12th day of the Islamic month of Rabi' al-awwal, while Shi'a Muslims mark it on the 17th of this month. Muhammed is believed to be the last prophet.
Well, since Muhammad(saw), Jesus, Moses and Abraham died, then everyone must die. Believe it or not
We believe the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) died of natural causes in the year 632 A.H.
Not all the Caliphs are the true successors of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Only first FOUR Caliphs are called Rashidoon - the Rightful Caliphs. Unfortunately, the caliphs after Hazrat Ali RAU didn't follow the teachings of Islam in letter and spirit. They can't be called the Rightful Caliphs.
a couple of years after Prophet Muhammad died. This is when the first caliph was chosen, abu-bakr. Shia's believed that Imam Ali should have been the caliph
