When the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) died, Abu Bakr (ra) his best friend was appointed kalipha. Shia's believe that he wasn't the right kalipha and Ali (ra) his son in law should have been kalipha. And from then on other differences have formed. But the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) told Muslims not to create splits in religion. That's why some Muslims like to not have the label of sunni or shia and rather just be called a Muslim.
