An amendment to the U.S. Constitution, adopted in 1868, that makes all persons born or naturalized in the U.S. - including former slaves - citizens of the country and gaurantees equal protection of the law.
Its Citizenship Clause provides a broad definition of citizenship that overruled the Dred Scott v. Sandford ruling by the Supreme Court (1857) that held that blacks could not be citizens of the United States. It was bridged so the Supreme Court could not consider it unconstitutional. thus stating that all persons born on American soil the right to be citizens of the US.
