The "Kalamazoo Case of 1874," as itis popularly known, established a legal system of taxation for funding secondary education.As was indicated earlier in this chapter, taxation had been approved over two hundredyears earlier for elementary education in Massachusetts. The decision rendered by theMichigan Supreme Court in the Kalamazoo Case of 1874 established the same taxingbasis for public high schools as had existed for public elementary schools.8 This now-famous case inaugurated the concept of funding high schools on an equal basis with elementary schools.
