Prior to his becoming President, he was very much a Democrat-republican. That is to say he was very much pro state's rights. Once in office though, he realized just how powerless the federal government was under the Articles of Confederation. If you were to look up the Latin root words for "Diverse" you'd find "Dis" -- to turn and "Vertere" -- apart. That being Diversity is disunity. And so too were the Articles of Confederation. The Constitution and The Bill of Rights removed a great deal of individual state autonomy and forced them to unite under these United States.

Jefferson our 3rd president believed that the French government was the best government there was at the time. This lead to the argue with France and America about war with Canada. Napoleon Bonaparte was going to kill America for good. What did Jefferson think what country was a threat? Jefferson thought that France were very strong and advanced in technology than America.
