While Thomas Nast may have written something at some point in his career, that is not what he is famous for. Mr. Nast is the father of the political cartoon. As a cartoonist and illustrator, he took on the rich and the powerful and showed his readers who was hypocritical, who was greedy, and who was corrupt; he also used his Cartoons to comment on current issues of his day, such as presidential campaigns. His best-known cartoons were seen in Harper's Weekly magazine from 1862 to 1884. He is also famous for coming up with the symbols still used for the Republican party and the Democratic party-- the elephant and the donkey.
Thomas Nast was a political cartoonist known for his caricatures and satirical drawings. He tackled issues such as corruption, slavery, and political scandals in his work, most notably his depictions of Boss Tweed and the Tammany Hall political machine in New York City. Nast's illustrations played a role in shaping public opinion and influencing political reform during the 19th century.
