When his father William the Conqueror died, he rushed to Winchester to seize the crown and royal treasure before his eldest brother Robert could get there. He had himself crowned as king of the English. He ruled England, leaving Robert to rule the family's possessions in France. He quarreled with the Church, suppressed an uprising by the nobles in favour of his brother Robert (which was led by his uncle Odo). He went on a hunting trip in the New Forest, buddied up with Sir Walter Tirel, and got shot dead.
