they wanted to jump him when telemachus was coming back to shore after a trip to search for his father. they were hiding in a shore, Athene said to poseidon theres a ship from Ithaca, lets give odysses's friends a scare (or sumthing like that) and so they put a fog around the ship (athene is actually on odysses's side and the ship was holding the suiters). So then telemachus waltz right past the suiters without a second glance.

Telemachus is a barrier between the suitors and Penelope. Telemachus insults the suitors in the first two books of the Odyssey, and threatens to eventually kill them. If Telemachus is dead, then there will be no man in the house. Penelope will be forced to marry. Further, it is easier to kill him before he is full grown.

Antinous never wants to kill Odysseus, because he never realizes Odysseus is still alive. He may have wanted to kill the beggar, whom is Odysseus in disguise, but is prevented from doing so by honour and Telemachus' threats. Odysseus as a beggar begs from Antinous and curses him when Antinous refuses impolitely. He does want to marry Penelope, Odysseus' wife.

Penelope learns what the suitors are thinking through her handmaidens, who eavesdrop on their conversations and report back to her. She also uses her own intuition and keen observation skills to understand the suitors' intentions and motivations. Additionally, Penelope occasionally interacts directly with the suitors to gather information and assess their behavior.
