Thomas Becket, Arch Bishop of Canterbury and titular head of the Roman Catholic Church in England, was canonised to sainthood by the Roman Catholic Pope Alexander in 1172. In accordance with Cannon (Church) law, still promulgated today, multiple miracles occurring during or subsequent to the invocation of the name of a potential saint is a path to sainthood. This coupled with his undisputed "death for his faith" as defined by the Roman Catholic Church is why Thomas Becket was cannonized in the nearly unprecedented short time after his death of just 2 years.
