He is currently still head of the Communist party of Cuba, but his younger brother Raul bagan acting as President in 2006. In a popular revolution against the Dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista, Castro turned the Caribbean island of Cuba into a Communist state. He and his supporters were long financed by the former Soviet Union, and retained power despite an embargo by the United States. The regime was mainly known for their expropriation of the private industries developed by foreign companies under Batista.

He did implement a national free health care plan, payed with the resources stolen by the socialist state, and children are educated in the field they show an aptitude for (they can not choose for themselves).
