The colonies thought of themselves as English before all else and at first there wasn't an American identity that we know today. During the revolution large groups of people helped and supported English troops/King. At the end of the war many of these people left the newly formed states for Canada and Nova Scotia. Many of the historical traditions that are followed today developed many years after the establishment of the US. People mainly iidentified themselves with the state or region they lived and not as American.
