In 1800, when Burr and Jefferson tied in electoral vote, Burr refused to concede and tried to sneak into the Presidency. This trick did not sit well with Jefferson and his supporters. Burr and Jefferson also disagreed on several matters.

He had to wait till there was a Northern victory, or it would look like a desperate measure.
When Confederate Jefferson Davis realized that slaves could be useful in protecting Richmond, he asked Virginia to draft 4,500 slaves to complete the entrenchments protecting Richmond. The number of 4,500 made this forced work project one of the largest ones of the war.

Fort Sumter, a fort that remained in the union, was running low on supplies. President Lincoln had to decide whether or not to supply fort. If he did he risked war if not he would giving in to the rebels [the confederate]. Lincoln informed South Carolina that he would be resuplying Fort Sumter. Confederate leaders decided to take over Fort Sumter before the supplies ships arrived. On April 12, 1861, the confederates opened fire on Sumter. the attack lasted for 34 hours until the fort had to surrender. The Conferderate attack on Fort Sumter was the beginning of the Civil War.
Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard then bombarded Fort Sumter. US Major Robert Anderson and his men eventually surrendered. The Confederation occupied the fort for the next four years. This event symbolized the first shots fired in the Civil War.
At the turn of the twentieth century, Britain recognised that Splendid Isolation would have to be abandoned.
