Mostly tenements... places where there were usually 40 people to a room that is smaller than a ordinary school classroom. There was deathly diseases, no air conditioning on a hot day or heat on a cold day. It was a bad environment to be in.

The history of Immigration started only with the visits of Columbus to America. Immigrants learning about the wealth and resources available,( believing America to be a part of India- having lot of riches as told by Columbus to the King of Spain,) started their voyages from all European countries to settle here. En-route they brought workers from Eastern countries to rehabilitate and settle themselves. They created settlements starting from the Eastern coast.
