The Marshal of England was equivalent to a modern field-marshal or chief of the Army; he was always a high-ranking knight who had experience in many battles and could also give the king advice on strategy and tactics.

A Marshal was always attached to the royal household and he would have his own entourage of knights, infantry soldiers and archers who might provide a royal bodyguard.

Like the Field Marshals of today, they were (especially in France) the highest army commanders. And like today's marshals in sports stadiums and on Golf courses, another kind of medieval marshals saw to it that in games and jousts the rules were obeyed and they would often also double as arbiters.
