Punishments by the Mayan civilization depended on the crime. Things such as murder, arson, incest, and rape were punished by death. Theft crimes required restitution, sometimes requiring the person to work as a slave. The lovers of women who committed adultery were stoned to death. Men who committed adultery were stoned to death if the woman they cheated with was also married.

The Mayans often used capital punishment for serious crimes. For minor crimes, a sort of fees had to be payed. If the fees could not be paid the offender was forced to be a slave until the crime was paid off.

Capital punishment was common in Mesoamerican penal law for grave crimes such as theft, adultery (including rape) and murder. Restitution was common for lesser crimes, such as minor theft, fraud or personal injuries. If the offender could not repay for such minor offenses, it was a common punishment to make him/her slave of the victim until debt was fully repaid.

Of course, as it still happens now (see OJ Simpson trial), nobles or priests were singled out of harsher punishments, with one notable exception: Aztecs and Mayans believed public drunkenness was the cause of crime and many social evils such as vandalism or rape. In the case of priests and nobles, they were often executed at the first offense, while common citizens were publicly humiliated on the first offense with subsequent offences punished by execution. Only the elder people were exempt of these rules.
