Worked , or raised kids, or both. Of course, there were those that were too old to work or too young, but they were a minority. American women volunteered in the Armed Forces, served as nurses in military hospitals, they also ferried all types of military aircraft, including the larger bombers. Many women worked in defense plants helping to produce the materials and equipment needed by the Armed Forces.
