Although Slavery was not ended in the North until Dec.6th, 1865, after the Civil War, the Emancipation Proclamation freed any slaves who could escape the Confederacy.

It is important to note that the famous Mason Dixon Line in Pennsylvania was used as a demarcation line after the last slaves north of that line were freed by 1847.
